Herbal Wax Sachets

Much like dried potpourri and botanical simmer pots, herbal wax sachets are a natural alternative to commercial air fresheners. They’re also a bit like fragrant candles except, instead of burning them, you set them on a table and let them naturally emit their fragrance into the air.

To make wax sachets fragrant, you add dried herbs, flowers, and/or spices to melted wax and let it set like a candle. I like to use dried herbs and flowers from my garden along with seasonal fruits and spices. For fall, some of my favorites are calendula, rosemary, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and cranberries.

Materials

  • 2 cups soy wax flakes

  • aluminum can

  • wooden popsicle stick

  • silicone molds

  • dried herbs, flowers, and spices

  • twine

  • long metal nail

Directions

1. Fill the aluminum can ¾ of the way with wax flakes. Place the can in the center of a small saucepan filled with 2 inches of water.

2. Heat the pan on medium to low heat and stir the wax with a wooden popsicle stick to help it melt evenly. As the wax melts, add the additional wax and continue to stir.

3. Once all the wax has melted, turn off the heat, add the essential oils, and stir to combine.

4. Neatly place half of the dried herbs, flowers, and spices into the base of the silicone molds, then pour the melted wax over them and allow it to cool. When the wax has just begun to set, place the remaining botanicals on top of the wax.

5. Once the wax has cooled and set, remove the bars from the silicone molds.

6. Carefully heat a long metal nail over a flame for 10-20 seconds, then use it to burn a hole in the top of each wax bar, working from back to front.

6. Thread twine through each sachet and tie with a knot.

7. Hang or place sachets near a window, on a shelf, or in a bowl where you can enjoy their fragrance.
