Three Ways to Use Citrus Scraps for Cleaning

Citrus fruits are a rich source of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber. When it comes to natural cleaning, the scraps are just as valuable as the fruit. The peels are believed to be antimicrobial, antibacterial, and high in an oil known as D-limonene, which acts as a powerful solvent for cutting dirt and grease. The citric acid from the fruit and peel can be used to help remove soap scum and mineral deposits, and the rind is high in flavonoids and limonoids, which create the perfect natural air freshener to bring life and cheer into any environment. Using citrus fruits for multiple purposes – culinary and cleaning – is also a simple and effective way to save money and reduce household waste. Just save the scraps next time you make fresh-squeezed orange juice, lemon méringue, or key lime pie, and incorporate them into the following simple and practical household cleaners.

CITRUS SOFT SCRUB

Ingredients

¾ cup baking soda

¼ cup grated citrus peels

¼ cup liquid castile soap

1 tablespoon hydrogen peroxide

Directions

Combine all the ingredients in a medium bowl and stir to form a thick paste. If the paste seems too dry, add more castile soap or hydrogen peroxide. If it seems too wet, add more baking soda. Transfer the paste to an airtight container and store until ready to use, for up to 3 months. To use, place a dab of cleanser on a wooden scrub brush, apply to the surface you wish to clean, and scrub. Let the paste sit and work its magic for 10 minutes, then wash it away or wipe it clean with a damp rag or towel.

CITRUS CARPET FRESHENER

Ingredients

2 cups baking soda

4 tsp grated citrus peels

½ cup dried lavender buds (optional)

Directions

Combine ingredients in a medium bowl and mix well. Pour onto a rimmed baking sheet and allow the citrus zest to dry out for 3-4 hours. Once dry, transfer the powder to a glass mason jar with an airtight lid. When ready to use, sprinkle the powder on rugs and carpets, let sit for 30 minutes, then vacuum as usual.

CITRUS GARBAGE DISPOSAL PELLETS

Ingredients

citrus peels

ice cube tray or silicone mold

water

Directions

Cut the citrus peels into 1-inch strips. Drop one strip into each compartment of an ice cube tray or silicone mold, cover with water, and set in the freezer to solidify. When the garbage disposal needs to be cleaned and deodorized, drop two to three frozen pellets into the disposal drain while running the garbage disposal and warm water from the faucet. The ice will cool and solidify the grease; the acidic citrus peels will cut the grease and deodorize the sink; and the warm water will wash it all away.
