Knit Hemp Scrubby Pattern
I love finding alternatives to sponges. Fortunately there are lots of options. Wooden scrub brushes, loofah sponges, compostable Swedish towels, and copper scrubbers are a few of my favorites. If you have basic knitting skills, you can also make scrubbies out of hemp yarn or cording. Hemp is ideal for cleaning. Aside from being naturally antibacterial, it’s also mildew-resistant, durable, long-lasting, biodegradable, and compostable. It’s machine-washable too and becomes softer and more absorbent with each wash. I like to toss our scrubbies in the wash along with our reusable rags. If they come out scrunched or in a tight, stiff ball, I press them flat with an iron.
For my scrubbies, I knit hemp into a 3-by-6-inch rectangle, but you can certainly experiment with different shapes and sizes. This pattern is for anyone with beginner knitting skills and makes an excellent first project if you’re just getting started.
Each scrubby takes about 30 minutes to make.
