Upcycled Mason Jar Pin Cushion

I love these kinds of DIYs - they’re easy, they take less than 5 minutes to complete, and they can usually be cobbled together with materials you already have on hand. For this one, all you’ll need is a mason jar, scrap fabric, stuffing, and glue. As for the mason jar, any size will work, as long as it comes with a band and ring lid. If you choose to use a larger jar than what’s called for below (half-pint), you’ll need to cut a larger piece of fabric to cover the band. As for fabric, most anything will work - just make it’s thin enough to allow the band to fit over it. For stuffing, you can use bunting, cotton balls, or wool roving. I’m sure there are other materials that would do the job, but those are the only ones I’ve personally tried.

As for what to keep inside your jar, the possibilities are endless. Off the top of my head: safety pins, stick pins, hand sewing needles, sewing machine needs, thread, measuring tape, buttons, string, chalk, snaps, sewing clips would all fit perfectly. I should also add that this makes a very sweet gift for budding and seasoned makers. I made a sewing kit for my daughter for Christmas one year, complete with one of these pin cushions, and she loved it. I hope you will too!

Materials

1, 1/2 pint mason jar with band and ring

1, 5” x 5” square of scrap fabric

stuffing, enough to make the cushion

glue (fabric glue or glue gun work well)

Directions

Step 1: Gather your materials.

Step 2: Roll the stuffing into a ball that has roughly the same diameter as the mason jar band. Apply a liberal amount of glue to the top surface of the band and attach the ball of stuffing.

Step 3: Place the fabric, wrong side down, on top of the stuffing. Turn the band over, apply glue liberally to the bottom surface, and carefully fold the ends, one at a time, towards the center of the band to glue them in place. Make sure all the sides are glued down, but don’t worry if it doesn’t look perfect. The band will cover up the wrinkles and folds.

Step 4: Place the band, cushion side up, on top of the mason jar, attach the band, and screw it in place. Fill jar with sewing knicks knacks like buttons, safety pins, sewing needles, etc.,

Enjoy!
